Another Planet Earth (poem)

Another Planet Earth

Nothing would please Angel more

than news a planet has been found

with oceans lapping sandy shores.

He scans all scientific prints

for word of objects circling stars

with habitable atmospheres.

He calls these signals from the front

and holds that astrophysicists

will one day net another Earth.

Suppose they do says Fox.  So what?

The cosmos may have Earths galore

we’ll find at astronomic cost

but none with any sign of life –

none of them worth waiting for.

But Angel thinks that searching stirs

the philosophic mind.

We have a deep-felt need to know

if we’re alone or one of multitudes.

And what those multitudes may be.

The answer may be very close.

It won’t be anything like clear

jeers Fox.
