Distinct among the showpiece patios,
a dozen potted bonsai constitute
a kind of pantheon or sacred grove.
They have the grace of cameos,
each slender silhouette displaying
calm and delicate adroitness.
Diminutive they may be, but convey
no sense of anything gone missing
in reduction to the miniature.
Who can belittle artistry which keeps
such faith with form and archetype,
and shows such skill in timber made petite?
